Remembering H. Paul Root (1937–2025)

By MSI Executive Director Tulin Erdem

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of H. Paul Root, former President of the Marketing Science Institute (MSI), who passed away peacefully at home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on May 5, 2025. Paul was a respected leader, scholar, and mentor whose contributions to marketing research and practice left a legacy.

Paul began his career with a strong foundation in statistics, earning his BS from Purdue University, where he would later complete his MSIM and PhD. His professional journey bridged academia and industry, with faculty appointments at the University of Michigan and Florida International University, and leadership roles at General Motors and DuPont. His work in these positions was always marked by his commitment to applying rigorous research to solve real business challenges.

In 1990, Paul became President of MSI, a role he often described as one of the best years of his career because they allowed him to help bridge the longstanding gap between academic theory and business practice. Under his leadership, MSI continued to grow as a unique forum for collaboration between marketing scholars and practitioners.

He said his years at MSI were some of the best years of his career because they allowed him to help bridge the longstanding gap between academic theory and business practice. Paul received many honors and awards during his career. He was perhaps most proud of receiving the American Marketing Association’s Parlin Marketing Award and most honored by having the AMA create the H Paul Root/MSI Award.

On behalf of MSI, we extend our deepest condolences to Paul’s family. He will be remembered with great respect and affection by all who had the privilege to know him.
