_Poster: The Impact of the Sharing Economy on Firms and Cities

Davide Proserpio, University of Southern California

Poster Session Presentation

In the last 20 years or so, technological advances such as the widespread penetration of the internet and smartphones facilitated the proliferation of online platforms such as eBay, Amazon, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Twitter, and, more recently, Airbnb. While different in their core missions, these platforms changed how consumers and firms interact, generating new challenges for marketing researchers. For example, reviews can affect firms' economic outcomes such a sales and revenue; social media platforms are providing firms with new ways of reaching and advertising to consumers; and peer-to-peer platforms such as Airbnb and Uber–often referred to as the sharing economy–are creating a new type of competition for long-established industries such as the hotel and taxi industry. Davide’s research empirically studies these platforms and challenges and provides important insights for firms, consumers, platforms, and policymakers.
